Camel trek in M’hamid

Morning departure from Ouarzazate to M’hamid and the dunes of Erg Lihoudi passing by Agdez, where the Dra’a valley starts, with a short stop for a tea break. Later, we drive off-road along the Dra’a valley and the ancient road of caravans as far as Zagora for lunch. In the afternoon the route continues to M’hamid which marks the end of the paved road and the beginning of the Sahara desert. Here an hour camel ride leads to the dunes of Erg Lihoudi for an unforgettable sunset and to spend the beauty of the night in a desert camp close to Erg Lihoudi dunes.

If you wake up early enough, you can watch the spectacle of the sunrise, when the colour of the dunes and the play of shadows are an awesome sight. After breakfast, the return from Erg Lihoudi dunes to M’hamid is on camel back and, the trip begins by driving north to Tamegroute for a visit to the potteries. They are famous throughout Morocco for the green glaze. Tamegroute has a small medina of covered desert streets and an ancient Quranic library which exquisite hand-written Arabic texts. From here, the road leads north again to Zagora for lunch. We arrive back in Ouarzazate, at the end of the day, on the other side of the Anti-Atlas and the mountain pass of Tizi-n-Tinfifite (1660m).
